Sprucing Up the Backyard for Dad

January 23, 2012

I am helping my elderly father get his garden in order this year. It is not as easy for him to bend and kneel and be active these days. I am doing some pruning and cleaning up, as well as planting new flowerbeds. I plan to get some nice new shrubs to go in the back corner. That is where I’d like to put his bird feeder. Filling the bird feeder is a chore that he can still manage. He really enjoys feeding the birds and watching them come to his yard. The problem is the mess that the little birdseed husks leave below. It is very unsightly. If we plant some shrubs there, I figure we won’t have to see the mess. I don’t know what type of shrub will be best, but hopefully the guys at the nursery will have some suggestions for me. I may even surprise him with a birdbath as well.

Galvanized Products and Aluminium

January 9, 2012

The price of aluminium is somewhat irregular; however, the usual rate that is going around is between $1 dollar to $10 dollars per pound. Anyone who has the intention to start a business in the aspect of buying and selling aluminium must be aware of the update concerning its price. The unstable condition of the price in the area of aluminium is not a matter of choice or policy, something behind it controls the situation. Here are two of the clear reasons why such a condition prevails. The reason why the said aluminium price is not fixed are the following: First is, the vulnerability of the trade result. Since it is being traded on a daily basis, then its price is not stable. Second is, for reason of fairness. The process of producing such is not easy and sometimes involved a good amount of money. Therefore, it depends on the efforts and expenses incurred.

The word aluminium is a variant term for aluminum; but the second one is the most common to people in general. Aluminum as a name came into existence through Humphrey Davy. He created that said name in the year 1808. Aluminum is not a heavy thing, it has a light weight. The raw supply of the same is abundant, it is due to the fact that a portion of the earth’s crust is made of it. Aluminum can be used in different things; for instance, metal sheets and the widely known machine tools.

Galvanized Sheet is a thing made of steel that has been coated with zinc to prevent rust to occur. The stated thing has been an asset to the people in general. For example, in the aspect of chairs and tables, many of it are made of galvanized sheet; in brief, it has been used in furnitures. Another area where the said object is being used is in the cars people drive. Some parts of it are made of galvanized steel. It is also used often in tool boxes. A lot of professions used tool boxes to carry the necessary tools with more convenience. Electricians need a tool box, the same with the carpenters and the car technicians. In other words, a galvanized sheet is an asset. It gives us protection and provides comfort indirectly through the things made out from it.

The metal boxes are used for storage purposes. It has the same usage with any other kind of box out there regardless of the materials used. Some boxes are made of a thick paper or a cardboard, while others are made of a metal. The latter has variations too. For instance, metal boxes are made of steel, some are made of aluminum, others are made of copper and iron. Talking about strength; iron, copper and steel are the strongest. The most expensive material among them is copper; aluminum, on the other hand, is the lightest in weight of them all.

A New Kind of Freedom: Abstract Painting

October 19, 2011

Abstract painting is a deviation from the confining sense of reality and a symbolic freedom of what we could be. Art and its history has been dominated by an obsession for form, an interpretation of reality trapped in a canvas and trapped by what it is we can understand with our senses. With abstract painting there is no true form but rather a visual language of what it is to let go, to attain freedom and express it in a blank canvas for all the world to see. It is a form that expresses being open to what it is we cannot understand with our senses, it is a way for the human mind to transcend the confines of the reality that we are harshly trapped in. This freedom is often misunderstood as it is significantly different or indefinable but that is the freedom in it, it cannot be trapped by a description but rather it grows with every other interpretation it can come across, it can never be confined and that is true freedom.

Types of Embroidery Machines

April 17, 2011

Embroidery machines available in the market today comes in various types. Basically, there are three types of embroidery machines. The first one is the embroidery only machine, because perhaps the household already has a sewing machine, or wouldn’t need any sewing at all. Then there is the combination of the two, a machine that can sew and then embroider. This is very ideal to seamstress and designers because of the convenience of an all in one machine. Then, there is the commercial type, which is used for faster productions. This type of machine is used in the big industry and manufacturers and can offer multiple needles and a wide choice of threads. Most of the commercial machines, like Brother embroidery machines, are computerized and a pre-programmed design is readily available. No matter the choice made, one must always take into consideration the salient features and functions a machine should have. This way, quality product will always be assured and the machines are used properly.

All About Tiles – Ceramic and Marble

January 14, 2011

Ceramic tile is a man-made material composed of widely available natural and inexpensive raw materials. In general, unglazed tile is produced by the dust pressed process or plastic process, both requiring very high firing temperature from 950 to more than 1200°C depending on the type of product. In the case of glazed tile, single or double firing can be used after the unglazed tile has been dried. As you can see, ceramic tile is mass-produced in factories under controlled conditions and its variety is seemingly limitless.

Marble and granite, on the other hand, are natural stones and no two pieces will be alike even if they are cut from the same block. Marble is a metamorphic rock, whereas granite is an igneous rock. They are produced in largely similar ways, involving quarrying, cutting and surface finishing.

The use of woodworking plans should include provisions for such tiles.

  1. A mountain with quality marble / granite is chosen as the location of the quarry, i.e. an open excavation or pit from which stone is obtained by digging, cutting, or blasting.
  2. Once quarrying is done by means of cutting, drilling and carting equipment, the large blocks of marble / granite removed from the mountain are sent to a fabricator to be sliced into thin slabs.
  3. Finally, the surfaces of the marble / granite are finished, i.e. polished, honed, chiseled or by other methods.

Convenient Crochet Techniques and Tips

November 15, 2010

Great eye-catching crochet creations and designs are often made by enthusiasts who do not even know Crochet Terms And Definitions. These people learn crocheting by watching others crochet and they explore and master the basic strokes and they eventually move on to creating their own unique technique in crocheting. Mothers who teach their young children are not limited by terms and definitions, they use whatever terms just so their children will understand and would be able to crochet. What is important for them is that their children will get to enjoy crocheting and will find their own technique that will make crocheting convenient and painless. It is surprising that young children are able to come up with their own designs and creations so far different from what their mothers have taught them and sometimes even far better than their mothers creations. Mothers who are able to teach their children to be better than they are will always consider this as a life time achievement, and I agree!

Mounting Photographic Prints

September 2, 2010

If you want to preserve photographs in an album or mount them for display, it’s tempting to reach for the tube of glue. However, over time the glue can react with the photos making them discolour. To avoid this happening and to keep your photos or any picture in good condition for years to come you’ll need to dry-mount these onto the page or board.

Dry-mounting sheets are available in craft or photographic shops and is essentially a thin waxy sheet that sticks the photos to paper or card when heated. It’s big benefit is that it will not deteriorate over time and is unaffected by moist conditions.

Place the photo face down and cover with a piece of the waxy sheet on top, with a cool iron (a wool setting should be ok) touch the centre with the tip of the iron to just fix the sheet in place. Turn over the photo with the sheet and trim the surplus edges so that the sheet matches the size of the photo. Put the photo in position on the mount or album page and cover with some kitchen towel, run the iron over the top to melt the waxy sheet, bonding it to the surface. It’s always best to try this on unwanted photos to make sure the iron temperature is not too hot.

If you wish to mount large photos or pictures, this process is not suitable, generally giving poor results. For these larger items, you should go to your local picture framer to get them professionally mounted.

There are many items that may require the dry-mount method. Generally anything that needs to be kept for a long time, small pet portraits, whether they’re your original photos or a water colour from a pet portrait artist can be fixed to it’s mount in this way.
